This project sprung out of a desire to make a quality and long lasting memorial for a late friend. Her family couldn't to buy a marker, so I offered to help. After having less than desirable results using a diamond drag bit, I was sure there had to be a better way. Some research into the granite engraving world found some extremely expensive machines and specialty bits that were cost prohibitive for my needs. I borrowed a key integration into many of their designs: an angled engraver that allowed high-speed diamond burs to be used as they were intended.
This led me down an extensive path of design and testing. I found that tool angle was critical to prevent excessive wear, and there also needed to be just the right amount of flex in the mounting design to prevent snapping the bits when plunging. The final problem to overcome the was the harmful dust this process created.
After over a dozen design iterations I arrived at this. I could not be happier with the results!
I've achieved reliable engraving at over 160ipm, with deep, clean, and crisp lines. It requires NO MODIFICATION to the existing Shapeoko router mounting bracket (of 69mm diameter) It incorporates an easily adjustable dust collection shoe that is compatible with both 1-1/4" and 2-1/2" vacuum hoses, and uses readily available and inexpensive rotary diamond burs.
It works on the hardest materials, including: Steel, Titanium, Stone, Glass, Porcelain, Marble, and Granite, and DOES NOT require any additional air or coolant systems!

You will need: 4x 3mm x 25mm Hex Screws, 4x 3mm x 12mm Hex Screws, and 8x 3mm Nylock nuts to complete assembly.

**Recommended Print Settings**
Use a high quality filament. I tested the design using both Hatchbox 1.75mm black PLA and ABS
1.6mm Wall Thickness, 1.6mm Top/Bottom Thickness
NO Supports, Brim optional but not necessary
I've had great results using 4mm diamond burs a 160ipm with 0.03" DOC, and 1mm burrs at 90ipm with 0.01" DOC.
*USE HEPA DUST COLLECTION AND WEAR >n95 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION! Granite dust, along with many other stones, contains high levels of silica.
This can cause Silicosis, which is a lung disease cause by severe scaring of the lung tissue, and can be FATAL!
